How to Make a Flagstone Patio

How to Make a Flagstone Patio If you’re interested in making your patio DIY style, we have a quick guide for you to follow. First things first, before you begin your project, you need to:
  • Pick the location that your patio will be. When working with flagstone, remember to keep some distance from plant life as they can invade the stone over time.
  • Design your flagstone patio. Think size and shape.
  • Contact a landscaping supply and labor store to get your flagstone and inquire about having them help with labor.
Once you’re ready to begin, you’ll need to do the following:

Use mason lines and stakes to mark the perimeter of your new patio.
  • Square and slope the layout
Make sure the area is even in size. It should also be level side to side, typically parallel to your house) and slope down and away from your home from end to end at a rate of 2 inches per 10 linear feet.
  • Excavate the area
Excavate all grass and vegetation from the area.
  • Install the gravel base
Add a two 2-inch layer of compactible gravel.
  • Add DG layer
Add a 2-inch layer of decomposed granite on top of the gravel and smooth and level it.
  • Lay and level the stones
Working end to end, lay your stones in whatever pattern you desire! To level them, add or remove some of the DG layer as needed.
  • Fill in the gaps
The gaps between stones can be filled with gravel, sand, or DG. Spray the area with water to get the fill in material to settle, and then add more as needed.
